TNB Tech Minute: The New Security Requirements for Nvidia’s China Chip Sales
14 Jan 2026
Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
Here's your morning TNB Tech Minute for Wednesday, January 14th. I'm Julie Chang for The Wall Street Journal. NVIDIA must meet new security requirements before sending its H200 AI chips to China.
In a rule published yesterday, the Commerce Department said NVIDIA must make sure there is sufficient supply of AI chips in the U.S., and its customers have to demonstrate adequate security procedures before semiconductors are shipped. The rules governing NVIDIA's exports are the next step in the U.S. government allowing the company to resume shipments to China.
Exports have effectively been halted since April, denting NVIDIA's business and the world's second-largest economy and pinching Chinese AI companies.
The government is also getting a 25% cut of NVIDIA sales.
Chapter 2: What new security requirements must NVIDIA meet for chip sales to China?
Airbnb has named a former leader of AI at Meta as the company's new chief technology officer. Ahmed Aldal led generative AI at Meta, where he headed the team behind Meta's Lama AI models.
He also previously worked at Apple, helping to develop the iPhone's display and multi-touch systems and the AI systems for the company's self-driving car project. Airbnb is currently implementing AI agents into its business to improve customer service, personalize recommendations, and facilitate trip planning.
And Coca-Cola is reshaping its leadership team to accelerate its digital transformation. The beverage giant announced today it'll create a new chief digital officer position and reorganize several senior leadership responsibilities. The move underscores efforts to centralize digital decision-making and speed up execution across its global business.
The changes are set to take effect at the end of March when a new CEO steps into the role. The company's president of its Eurasia and Middle East operating unit will take on the newly created role of chief digital officer. And that's your TNB Tech Minute. We'll be back this afternoon with more.
