Here's your Money Briefing for Friday, November 12th. I'm Trina Nuri for The Wall Street Journal, filling in for J.R. Whalen. The labor market right now has more openings than applicants. Help-wanted signs are everywhere, and U.S. companies are searching high and low for workers to sign up for a shift. And now, to get more candidates in the door, some employers are easing up on job requirements. So what does this mean for workers?
Chip Cutter 1:02
I think for job seekers out there, the application process might look a lot different. You might have that offer in hand without ever speaking to an employee, without ever having to go through an interview.
Trenae Nuri 1:11
Coming up, we'll talk with our workplace management and leadership reporter, Chip Cutter, about the ways companies are speeding up the hiring process. That's after the break.

Typically, when you apply for a job, you have to fill out an application, maybe submit a resume and cover letter, and clear a background check, not to mention having all the right skills and experience. But in today's tight labor market, employers just want you in and hired quickly. So how are companies easing up on job requirements? And how does the new accelerated hiring process work?

How is the current U.S. labor market creating a shortage of applicants?

Trenae Nuri 2:23
WSJ workplace management and leadership reporter Chip Cutter is here to explain. Hi, Chip. Thanks for being here.
Chip Cutter 2:30
Thanks so much.
Trenae Nuri 2:31
Chip, can you first give us a little bit of lay of the land for the labor market right now? Why do some companies feel compelled to relax their job requirements?
Chip Cutter 2:41
Well, as we've been reporting on for months now, this is one of the tightest labor market that employers have seen in years. And many companies are getting desperate. They realize if they don't change how they hire, it's becoming increasingly difficult to get people in the door. And so that's why we see employers in all sorts of industries really relaxing their qualification requirements, thinking differently about how they bring people in the door, streamlining their hiring processes. We've had more than one company tell us that if you wait too long, if you dawdle in trying to hire someone, that your competitors could swoop that person up and you might lose the candidate. So a lot of companies feel like they just have to be quick here or risk not being able to fill these jobs.
Trenae Nuri 3:18
Okay, so let's talk about what companies are actually doing to get more people in the door and on their teams. What kind of requirements are we talking about that are being relaxed?
Chip Cutter 3:27
It's everything from background checks in some cases to drug tests or even requirements that people submit a GPA or have a college degree. And so one of the examples I think is most interesting that came up in our reporting is the beauty retailer, The Body Shoppe. And this is a company that has really kind of done a lot to change how they hire. They've dropped background checks, drug tests. They want to make sure that they say that they can bring in candidates. They can kind of broaden the funnel, so to speak, and get high-quality candidates without some of these requirements that they may have had in the past.
