Here's your midday brief for Thursday, December 23rd. I'm J.R. Whalen for The Wall Street Journal. An at-home COVID-19 pill from drugmakers Merck and partner Ridgeback Biotherapeutics has been cleared for use by the Food and Drug Administration. Doctors will be able to prescribe the drug to adults at high risk of severe disease shortly after they develop mild to moderate symptoms. This week, the FDA also cleared a COVID pill from Pfizer. The Commerce Department says consumer spending rose 0.6 percent in November. That's less than October's pace when holiday shoppers snatched up gifts earlier than usual in anticipation of product shortages. Meanwhile, worker filings for unemployment benefits are hovering at the lowest level in more than half a century.
The Labor Department says initial jobless claims last week held steady at 205,000 as a strong labor market kept layoffs low. And in his annual news conference with world reporters, Russian President Vladimir Putin denied that his country is seeking conflict with Ukraine and the West. He accused the West of stoking anti-Russia sentiment in Ukraine and defended the need to protect his country's integrity and sovereignty against what he described as attempts by NATO to encroach on Russia's doorstep.
