NCAAMBKB – Men’s College Basketball Last Night Michigan 58, Rutgers 45 Michigan 58, Rutgers 45 – Michigan trails early, pulls away from Rutgers for 58-45 win Dug McDaniel scored 16 points and had five steals as Michigan rallied from an early 10-point deficit to earn a 58-45 win over Rutgers on Thursday night. Michigan was without Jett Howard, who averages just under 15 points per game, and the Wolverines managed just a McDaniel 3-pointer over the first six minutes while the Scarlet Knights opened a 13-3 lead. Kobe Bufkin finished with 14 points with three steals and three assists for Michigan (16-12, 10-7). Hunter Dickinson posted a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Cam Spencer paced Rutgers (17-11, 9-8) with 11 points and seven rebounds. Clifford Omoruyi had 10 points and 10 boards. Michigan plays host to Wisconsin on Sunday. The win lifts the Wolverines into a three-way tie with Maryland and No. 17 Indiana for third place in the Big Ten Conference with three games left in the regular season. The top four finishers earn a bye into the conference quarterfinals. Franz Wagner added 21 points, and Carter controlled the boards in the fourth quarter, finishing with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Jaden Ivey led Detroit with 25 points. He hit a 3-pointer with 4.5 seconds left to tie it. Celtics 142, Pacers 138 – OT – Tatum has 31, breaks tie late in OT, Celtics outlast Pacers Jayson Tatum scored 31 points, including the final four in the last minute of overtime, and the Boston Celtics outlasted the Indiana Pacers 142-138. Jaylen Brown added 30 points as the Celtics improved the NBA’s best record to 43-17. It was 138-all with 56.2 seconds left before Tatum hit a pair of free throws. He capped the scoring with a tip-in off the glass with 10.4 seconds to go. Myles Turner tied his career high with 40 points for the Pacers. He made a career-best eight 3-pointers and Indiana shot 22 of 49 overall on 3s. Tonight Brooklyn at Chicago, 8:00 p.m. Saturday Toronto at Detroit, 12:00 p.m. Indiana at Orlando, 7:00 p.m. Sunday Washington at Chicago, 3:30 p.m. NHL – National Hockey League Last Night Detroit Red Wings 4, New York Rangers 1 Red Wings 4, Rangers 1 – Red Wings boost NHL playoff push, beat Rangers 4-1 Filip Zadina scored the go-ahead goal midway through the second period and Ville Husso made 30 saves to help the Detroit Red Wings beat the New York Rangers 4-1. The Red Wings have surged into the playoff picture with seven wins in eight games, giving them a chance to earn a wild card and end a seven-year postseason drought. Vincent Trocheck pulled New York into a 1-all tie shortly before Zadina scored. Jaroslav Halak stopped 19 shots for the Rangers, who have dropped three straight since a seven-game winning streak. The bases are expanding from 15-inch squares to 18 inches, which cuts down the distance between them by 4 1/2 inches. The distance between third and home and home and first was trimmed by 3 inches. With the new bases, major league teams could try a more aggressive approach on the basepaths. The bases also could help prevent injuries. NCAAFB – Jim Harbaugh: Michigan good place to be despite challenges Jim Harbaugh says that Michigan might not be perfect, but that the football program “doesn’t get any better” compared to other programs. Since losing in the College Football Playoff semifinals, Harbaugh interviewed with the Denver Broncos and talked to the NCAA about alleged violations. He also fired an assistant coach under investigation by police. Harbaugh said multiple coaches on his staff had conversations with NFL teams but chose to stay at the school, adding: ““People do what they think is best for them professionally and personally.” Golf – PGA – Horschel, Bramlett lead Honda Classic with 1st-round 65s Billy Horschel has never won a PGA Tour event in his home state of Florida. His quest to change that is off to a fine start. Horschel shot a 5-under 65 on Thursday, tying him with Joseph Bramlett for the first-round lead in the Honda Classic at PGA National. Bramlett had a bogey-free round. Horschel had six birdies and one bogey. Pierceson Coody and Justin Suh were one shot back. Coody is playing his first PGA Tour event as a professional on a sponsor exemption. He’s a two-time winner in 15 starts on the Korn Ferry Tour since turning pro last summer. Golf – LIV – LIV Golf’s 2nd season has team concept, new faces, TV deal LIV Golf embarks on its second season with more emphasis on the team concept and a few new faces. Dustin Johnson is coming off a big year with the Saudi-funded rival league. He amassed just over $35.6 million in eight tournaments. There was minor movement among the teams. LIV Golf was not able to add big stars to its roster during the offseason. The highest-ranked player was Thomas Pieters of Belgium at No. 35 in the world. The first tournament starts Friday at Mayakoba. The Mexican resort hosted a PGA Tour event in the fall. MCCAA – Junior College Athletics Last Night Women’s Basketball Lake Michigan College 66, Kellogg Community College 53 Kalyah Watson had a game high 19 points to lead Lake Michigan College to a 66-53 win at Kellogg Community College. The win by LMC clinches a berth in the playoffs.
