WTF with Marc Maron Podcast

Episode 1608 - Richard Gadd

13 Jan 2025

Description

Richard Gadd created the Netflix series Baby Reindeer as a way to work through traumatic events in his life that were hard to process. But it became equally difficult to process the runaway success of the show and the impact it had on his life. Richard talks with Marc about how his early days doing standup in the UK and writing stage shows for himself were underscored by a lack of boundaries and a feeling that something was missing inside of him. He also explains why his follow-up to Baby Reindeer is a personal gamble. 65.461 - 93.951 Marc Maron

Alright, let's do this. How are you, what the fuckers, what the fuck buddies, what the fuck nicks? What's happening? I'm Marc Maron. This is my podcast, WTF. Welcome to it. I'm okay for now. Cats are safe. Kit is safe. Winds are picking up today. I don't know what to do with that. I don't imagine anybody has the brain to manage what is happening out here. I'll talk about that in a second.

95.021 - 119.274 Marc Maron

But I did pull myself away from the panic of being home and the need to be close to the cats if we needed to evacuate to go do a couple of gigs. Because I felt like I had to, because if I didn't show up for that. And look again, this situation out here is fluid and it's tragic and it's fucking incomprehensible. I went up to Sacramento and Napa. It's Sacramento Friday night.

119.334 - 143.969 Marc Maron

And I, you know, I flew up there. Ali Lukowski came with me and she opened. But I was, you know, in shock and traumatized and fucked up. And I had to move through it. And I did it on stage for an audience that was incredibly supportive and understanding and understood what was happening in the world, the world of their state, Los Angeles. People had friends, family there, here.
