There hasn't been a failure if there's a disagreement. And in fact, that might be something that we should all be moving towards. I have been so heartened to see how many women want to have conversations about these topics. And I'm just frequently struck by how that's framed as a bad thing. That women are disagreeing about this stuff or having really strong opinions about it. And I think it's incredible. And I think women can and should feel empowered to... to air their disagreements and to air their opinions without it being turned into some like gendered gossip mag feeling. And so I think women should really feel empowered to do so and empowered to take their own opinions and their own arguments seriously because they are serious and they're worth consideration.
Now, a couple of years ago, I found myself the proud owner of a couple of miniature donkeys. That is going to make more sense in a minute. I know it sounds strange. I'm Georgie McCourt, the editor of Marie Claire, and thank you so much for joining me today. Now, I love my job. I love it so much. But let me tell you, I have at times, as I'm sure you have, gone deep into the fantasy where I leave it all behind. The city and the pressure and the pace for a much simpler life in the country. And instead of the long commute to work and home again...
How did Caro Claire Burke's novel 'Yesteryear' come to be?
I'd be doing things like churning my own butter and baking bread and making wattle wreaths. Sounds heavenly, doesn't it? The kids and I would look really great in earthy linens and I'd start a TikTok account to show off my newfound homemaker bliss. Ironically, that is where today's guest, Caro Claire Burke, started out. She was swirling in the vortex of what's known as Tradwife TikTok, where perfectly dressed women in beautiful homesteads with kids who never cry, making food from scratch. But as you know, if you've spent any time on the internet lately, that is where the fantasy gets a little bit darker. Because it's beliefs like men should have jobs while women should only do unpaid domestic work.
Women should be subservient at all times. Feminism is evil. And the deeper you dive, the more it starts to look like traditional wives are on one side of the coin. And on the flip side is the manosphere. It is no surprise that Carol Claire Burke's novel Yesteryear which is about a successful American trad wife influencer who one day wakes up in the brutal 1850s, has been an absolute runway hit. Because I think for so many of us, somewhere in the squeeze of demanding jobs, crushing mortgages and wanting to be good parents, trying to eat enough protein and worrying about our own parents, it can feel like there's not a lot of choice or freedom left. And that's why it's really important to say up front, this conversation is not about condemning anyone's choices.
We are all in this together. Yesteryear is the book that all your friends will definitely be talking about next time you manage to catch up with them. And today's episode is a little treat for you because Marie Claire's deputy editor, my work wife, Mel Gordron, is going to be stepping in for me and interviewing the yesteryear author, Caro Claire Burke. And you had better believe me when I say you are going to want to hear this.
So I had been, I used to be very active on TikTok and this was two winters ago. So winter of 2024, and I was very involved in the conversation about Tradwives and the discourse about it. And I also was working in media at the time and I had gotten my job to let me like research this topic and write essays about it.
