Caregiver Burnout - Reviewing Concerns, Resources, and Caregiver Self-Assessments

Welcome back to another episode of the You're Not Alone Podcast! This week Morgan and Val discuss caregiver burnout, a real issue many family caregivers experience while assisting with the care of a loved one. They highlight these concerns and discuss available resources for caregivers. Via the American Physchological Association, caregivers often experience the following problems while managing the care of a family member:- Mental Health Concerns: Depression, Anxiety, Stress, Guilt, Sadness, Easily Irritated, Feeling Isolated or Abandoned by Others, Anticipatory Grief- Physical Health Concerns: Fatigue, Sleep Problems, Risk of Illness, Injury or Mortality, Weakened Immune System, Dysregulation of Stress Hormones- Functional and Cognitive Impairment: Greater Need For Help with IADL Assistance, Difficulty with Memory and Concentration- Secondary Strains: Work/Employment, Financial Strains, Relationship Stress, Loss of Time for Self-Care, Reduced Quality of Life- Care Decisions: When Is It Time for Various Services, Residential Placement, End of Life Care Planning- Resources and Eligibility for Services: Housing, Healthcare, Community Services, Respite- Family Challenges: Conflict about Care, Lack of Support for Caregiver, Balancing Needs of Healthy and Sick Family Members, Behavioral Issues, Interpersonal Conflicts, Lack of Cooperation by Care Recipient-Advocacy for Care: Interface with Service Systems, Coordinating Systems(https://apa.org/pi/about/publications/caregivers/practice-settings/common-problems)For more information about the caregiver support groups discussed in this episode, visit: https://www.azcaregiver.org/support-groups-care-for-caregiversThank you to our friends who participated in offering your input and advice for our caregiver community!
