Hey, Yap fam. One of the biggest traps for ambitious people is believing that success and happiness are the same thing. We chase promotions, money, recognition, only to find satisfaction fades as quickly as it arrives. The real challenge isn't achieving more. It's learning how to be happy while you're achieving. In this Yap Classic episode, we're revisiting my interview with happiness expert, Arthur Brooks. Arthur is a Harvard professor, bestselling author, and columnist for The Atlantic. He spent decades studying how strivers can design lives that are not only successful, but deeply meaningful. In this conversation, Arthur reveals how the constant chase for goals can trap us on the satisfaction treadmill, and why the key to escaping it lies in shifting from fluid to crystallized intelligence.
Hala Taha 2:26
Arthur explains how embracing life's struggles rather than avoiding them can actually fuel deeper joy and why at the end of the day, love, not money or status, is what truly drives a fulfilling life. So yeah, fam, I want you to sit back and enjoy this conversation with the one and only Arthur Brooks. Arthur, I'm super excited for this conversation and really appreciate the work that you've done in this space.
Arthur Brooks 2:52
Well, thank you. I can't wait to talk to your audience. I mean, this is a huge show. Congratulations on your unbelievable success. Are you happy?
Hala Taha 2:59
I am happy. I mean, I'm doing the work, but there are things that I learned from your work that I'm like, oh, I better start switching gears. We'll get into that. But let's start from the beginning of your happiness work journey. So based on my research, you studied the topic of happiness when you were working at the American Enterprise Institute. Like I mentioned earlier, it's one of the world's leading think tanks. What got you initially curious about happiness and why did you start studying it?
Arthur Brooks 3:27
Well, I'm trained as a social scientist. Human behavior is what really, really interests me. And I've looked at a lot of different things. I've looked at beauty, why people think things are beautiful, why people love art. Later, I looked at philanthropy and charitable giving, why people give to things that are really important to them, and kind of the taproot of both beauty and giving. charitable behavior and generosity is happiness. People want to be happier. And so, you know, a couple of decades ago, I thought, well, why am I not actually going to the root of this thing? And frankly, why am I not studying the thing that I care about the most?
