Your Greek Word On A Sunday

Episode 9: Onomatopoeia

04 Mar 2018

Description

(Intro with soft piano music)Hello and welcome to your Greek Word on A Sunday. A weekly , bite-size podcast for anyone curious on language, etymology and connections. I am your host Emmanuela Lia and wherever you are in the world if you want to entertain your brain for a few minutes, this is the podcast for you. Let's go!I always thought that the English find this word difficult not because of its meaning but because the original spelling has been kept. And that, can be a tad confusing since it's a different alphabet. Ονομα (onoma) in Greek means 'name' , ποιώ (pio/poio) means 'I  create' , ' I make'. Their combination makes a word that describes all words that sound similar to what they mean like 'gasp' or 'hiccup' or 'moo'.
