Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a potential complication of prematurity, caused by development of abnormal vascularisation of the retina. The lower the birthweight and gestational age, the higher the risk of ROP. Many cases of ROP require monitoring only, but some require further management by a specialist team.
