英語に「3つの証拠」はない！｜UCL留学

日本語では「3つの証拠」と言えるが、英語では *three evidencesとは言えず、three pieces of evidenceという言い方をするしかない。 Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA)の　350 million words規模のデータを分析した論文によると、日本語ネイティブの感覚とは裏腹に、”evidence”という英単語は、頑ななまでに不可算名詞としての振る舞いをすることが報告されている。 英語では informationも不可算名詞だが、フランス語の informationは可算名詞であることを考えると、「実体のない対象を指す名詞は不可算」とも言い切れず、可算・不可算の研究は奥深い。 【参考文献】 Grimm, S., & Wahlang, A.
