It first appeared in literature in 1008 (Kanko 5). The author is Murasaki Shikibu. Through the protagonist Hikaru Genji, the story depicts the aristocratic society of the Heian period, including love, glory and fall, political desire and power struggles. Akiko Yosano, a passionate female poet, bravely worked on a modern translation in 1902, when there were no reference books, with the goal of completing the translation in 100 months.
