Horses in China and English 中国生肖与英文中的“马”在中国生肖文化中，每个生肖都代表着不同的特征。属马的人常被形容为勇于尝试（willing to try）、精力充沛（full of energy），并且容易迈向成功（gain success quickly）。��为什么马会有这些象征呢？很多成语中藏着马的身影：（1）马到成功：means instant success / success comes swiftly (迅速取得成功)。（2）一马当先：means take the lead (领先或带头)。（3）龙马精神：means full of energy and drive (精力旺盛、干劲十足)。这些成语不仅体现了马在中华文化中的积极象征，也呼应了属相马的人的特征。在英文语境中，马的形象也很正面。人们常将马与strong（强大）、hard working（努力）、loyal（忠诚）、majestic（庄严）等特质联系在一起（associate with）。主播Flora表示她的朋友就会用这些词来形容她；主播Adrian表示except for (除了) “majestic”，其他词对他来说都很适合。02. Common English Idioms Related to Horses 与“马”相关的英文日常习语Hold your horses → 慢慢来许多年前，当人们还用马拉车时（had horse-drawn carriages），有时候需要hold（拉住）马。“Hold your horses” is a way of telling someone to wait (别急), slow down (慢一点), or be patient (耐心些) before acting. 其实这句话在生活中很常用：要是自己有点冲动的时候，你可以自言自语一句“Hold your horses”。Straight from the horse’s mouth → 一手消息It means getting information directly from the source (源头), 不是二手的（not second-hand）.比如：当你和同学说，我是从老师口中得知的这件事情，绝对是一手消息。You can say, “I heard it straight from the horse’s mouth”. 听起来有些奇怪（weird），实际上we could just say, “I heard it straight from the teacher’s mouth”。这可能是因为“马”象征着忠诚（loyal）。当然，不建议当着teacher本人的面这么说。That must be super awkward (尴尬的).Dark horse → 黑马In English, dark horse refers to a person who is little known (不起眼) but unexpectedly wins or succeeds (意外大获成功). “Dark horse”经常用在比赛语境中（context of competitions）。这和中文里的“黑马”几乎完全对应。Workhorse → 吃苦耐劳的人 / 物它形容努力（hardworking）、可靠（reliable）、坚韧的（tough）人或物。不仅可以形容人，也可以形容工具、设备等，例如：“This old laptop is a real workhorse; I’ve used it every day for six years.”（这台笔记本很耐用，我用了六年都没有坏。）Get off your high horse → 别骄傲自大当有人自大（superior）、傲慢（arrogant）的时候，你就可以说：“get off your high horse (从你的高马上下来——别自大了)”。Beat a dead horse → 徒劳它字面意思是“打一匹死马”，实际是指“没什么用，徒劳”。经常以否定形式“don’t beat a dead horse”出现。当你劝一个人不要费力去改变不可能改变的事情（something that is impossible to change）时，就可以说：“Don’t beat a dead horse”。Don’t horse around / Quit horsing around → 别闹了这是主播Adrian爸爸最喜欢对Adrian和其他兄弟姐妹（siblings）说的话。当你希望对方认真一点（act serious）时，就可以说：“don’t horse around / quit horsing around”。03. 主播们最喜欢的习语在这些关于马的习语（idioms）中，主播Adrian最喜欢“get off your high horse”，因为它总让人联想到西部电影里的牛仔（cowboys），而且特别适合用来回应那些自大的人（a comeback towards arrogant people）。主播Flora最喜欢“hold your horses”，她觉得这个说法特别可爱——仿佛每个人心里都有一匹想往前冲的马，我们要抓紧它（hold it tight），以免它突然冲出去（dash out），并且告诉它：别急，慢慢来。欢迎大家在评论区留言：你有没有喜欢的和马相关的习语或者中文的成语呢？Do you have any favorite idioms about horses, in both English and Chinese?
