今回のテーマは、 『ばんえい競馬』。世界で唯一、北海道の帯広で開催されている「ばんえい競馬」。1トンにおよぶ大型の馬 「ばんば」 がソリを曳き、スピードと力を競う競技です。かつて、旭川、北見、岩見沢、帯広、 道内4つのまちで開催されていた公営の「ばんえい競馬」ですが、財政難から平成19年度以降、「ばんえい十勝」として、帯広の単独開催になっています。一時は存続の危機を迎えた「ばんえい競馬」ですが、近年は１０年以上に渡って売り上げが伸び続け、昨年度の馬券販売は、史上最高の559億円を記録。また、北海道の歴史を伝える存在として、「ばんば」を含む「北海道の馬文化」は北海道遺産にも選ばれています。今回も、「ばんえい競馬今昔物語」の著者で、北海学園大学 経済学部 教授 古林英一さんに「ばんえい競馬」について伺います。
