今回のテーマは、 『新・赤れんが庁舎』。札幌市の中心部に建つ、北海道庁旧本庁舎。北海道民からは「赤れんが庁舎」と呼ばれ、親しまれています。開拓使本庁舎に代わって、1888年、明治21年に建てられた「赤れんが庁舎」。設計したのは、鉄道技術者としても活躍した平井晴二郎 （ひらい・せいじろう）。明治42年、原因不明の火災に遭うなどしましたが、 いくつもの危機を乗り越え、今に明治の息吹を伝えています。そして「赤れんが庁舎」は、2019年からの大規模改修工事を経て、7月25日、リニューアル・オープン。明治から続く重厚なつくりは残しながら、北海道の歴史と文化、観光情報の発信拠点として生まれ変わりました。今回は、「赤れんが庁舎」の改修工事に関わった札幌市立大学 名誉教授 羽深久夫さんに、お話を伺います。
