今回のテーマは、 『昆虫のまち・札幌』。札幌には、山や森、川や湿地など、多様な自然環境が広がり、多くの生き物が暮らしています。その生態系を支える、小さいけど、大きな存在が、昆虫です。花粉を運ぶハチなどの昆虫がいることで、果物や野菜が生産できる、というように、私たち人も、生態系とそれを支える昆虫から大きな恩恵を受けています。そして、北海道大学は、その前身の札幌農学校時代から昆虫を研究してきた長い歴史があり、収蔵する昆虫標本は、世界に誇る貴重なコレクションになっています。大都市でありながら、多様な昆虫が暮らす札幌。小さな昆虫を通して、札幌のまちを見たとき、どんな姿が現れるのでしょうか。今回も、昆虫分類学が専門の北海道大学総合博物館 特任教授 大原昌宏さんに「昆虫のまち・札幌」をテーマにお話を伺います。
