秋を彩る木々の紅葉。北海道も紅葉の季節を迎えました。2017年、コロナ禍前になりますが、日本政府観光局のデータによると、秋に日本を訪れる外国人観光客は増加傾向にありました。その理由の一つが「紅葉」。日本の紅葉の美しさが海外にも伝わり、多くの外国人観光客が訪れるようになったのです。そうした中、日本で最も早く紅葉が楽しめ、ここにしかない、特別な紅葉があると言われる北海道。今回は、長年、樹木や森林の研究をしてきた北海道大学 農学研究院の小池孝良さんに「北海道の紅葉」について伺います。
