今回のテーマは、美唄市の 『宮島沼』。札幌と旭川の中間に位置する美唄市。農業が盛んなまちです。まちを貫く国道12号線から石狩川・月形方面へ車を走らせると、水田が広がる中に、周囲およそ2.7キロ、ほぼ円形の沼が現れます。それが宮島沼。ここは、国の天然記念物「マガン」の国内最大・最北の寄留地として知られ、国際条約 「ラムサール条約」に登録されています。ラムサール条約は、「水鳥にとって国際的に重要な湿地」を登録して、賢く利用しながらも環境を保全するもので、周囲わずか2.7キロの沼は、「水鳥にとって、なくてはならない大切なオアシス」として世界に評価されているのです。今回は、「宮島沼 水鳥・湿地センター」の牛山克巳さんに、春を迎えた「宮島沼」について伺います。
