旭川市旭山動物園は日本最北の動物園です。「伝えるのは命」が園内の一貫したテーマで、動物の自然な生態が見られる行動展示を実施し、一躍有名になりました。1997 年から入園者数が増加し、北海道を代表する観光地となっており、国内だけではなく海外からも数多くの観光客が訪れています。今回は、旭川市旭山動物園 園長の坂東 元さんに「旭川市旭山動物園」についてお話を伺いました。
