「黒曜石」 は、北海道では「十勝石」とも呼ばれています。主な原産地は北海道のほか、佐賀や大分、長崎、熊本などの九州地区、長野、伊豆などにもありますが、日本一の原産地はなんといっても北海道です。その北海道内でも産地があり、遠軽町白滝、上士幌町の十勝三股をはじめとする十勝北部、置戸町、 赤井川村が黒曜石の四大産地といわれています。中でも、遠軽町白滝は国内最大の黒曜石産地で、 高品質な黒曜石がたくさん見られ、埋蔵量も世界的規模といわれており、地質学や考古学上、黒曜石の貴重な遺産であるとして、2010 年 9 月に白滝ジオパークに認定されています。 今回は、白滝ジオパーク推進協議会事務局の松村 愉文さんに「黒曜石」について伺います。
