大唐开元二十二年正月二十六日，天气很冷，留守洛阳的官员，冒着寒风，列队迎接自长安来到东都的开元皇帝。这样冷的天气，皇族通常会在长安近畿的骊（lí）山温泉宫避寒。然而，开元皇帝却在正月的寒天，带了百官、皇族中主要人员、侍从、兵卫等两万五千多人，行于道路，冒严寒风雪而来——洛阳区内虽然没有下雪，但东都留守官员知道，皇帝一行在过潼关时曾遇雪。虽然如此，皇帝的车骑到达时，仪容鲜明，并未因寒冷和旅途风雪而显出惫颓。皇帝已有两年又四个月不曾来东都洛阳了，至于选在正月间驾幸东都，更久，足足隔了十二年。
