我们都知道元素周期表上的每一个元素都有一个特征谱线。当原子被加热后，原子会处于激发态，在电子跃迁回低能态时，会产生特定的发射谱线。当光照射到原子时，原子也会吸收于发射谱线相同波长的吸收线。如果我们观察太阳光中所有单个波长的光，我们就可以通过光谱中的吸收特性找出太阳最外层的元素。
