喺中世紀末，歐洲城市嘅邊陲，有一大片荒涼同無辦法長期居住嘅土地，呢片土地就好似包圍住城市嘅開放沙灘，呢個沙灘曾經居住住一種老舊嘅恐懼，以致到一般人唔會輕易靠近，被歸屬為非人（L’in-humain）嘅領域，為方便討論，我哋將呢種領域，稱之為「非人荒漠」。 你覺得「非人荒漠」過去擁有嘅恐懼係咩？ 呢個恐懼嘅名極為古老，佢就係《聖經》當中提及到嘅「痲瘋病」。 歐洲人對「痲瘋病」避之則吉，認為得到「痲瘋病」嘅人（痲瘋病人）得到上帝嘅懲罰，於是喺城市嘅邊陲，建立被人詛咒嘅社區——痲瘋院，將痲瘋病人一個個送到痲瘋院（其中一個主要原因，係唔想被痲瘋病人傳染）。呢個做法，由中世紀前期已經開始。中世紀幾時開始，無一個定案，有人認為係西羅馬帝國最後一位皇帝被廢黜嘅年份——476年，象徵住蠻族擊倒西羅馬，西方文明要喺亂局當中以各自力量重建基督教文化。 Foucault指出，從中世紀前期，到十字軍東征結束為止（十字軍東征結束喺1270年），喺呢七百幾年間，歐洲大陸嘅痲瘋院數量不斷提升……
