Good morning and welcome, everybody. Good morning and welcome, everybody. Good morning. I'm Chief Justice Patricia Guerrero. And on behalf of the entire court, I'm so pleased to welcome you to a special session of the California Supreme Court. This is a historic moment for the court as we convene here at Colton Hall for the first time since 1959. We're proud to be with you at what's considered to be the birthplace of California, the site where the state's first Constitution was drafted in 1849. Article VI of the new Constitution, covering the judicial branch, provided for a Supreme Court consisting of a Chief Justice and two Associate Justices. I'm glad that has changed over time. And now there are six associate justices.

My colleagues on the court in the order of seniority are Justice Carol Corian, Justice Goodwin Liu, Justice Leandra Krueger, Justice Josh Groban, Justice Marty Jenkins and Justice Kelly Evans. We're thrilled to be here as part of our outreach efforts, inviting students of local schools to watch the court at work during oral argument. Our purpose is to bring the court to the community so that more people can gain a better understanding about the courts and our judicial system. I know you've already been busily preparing for today with the assistance of our local court judges, justices, and various attorneys. Thank you to everybody who made today's session possible, including our court clerk, Jorge Navarrete.

And a special thanks as well to the Sixth District Court of Appeal, led by Administrative Presiding Justice Mary Greenwood, and all of her colleagues at the court, and Baltazar Vasquez, the CEO for the Sixth District Court of Appeal, to our Monterey County Superior Court judges, led by our presiding judge, Carrie Panetta, I saw her earlier. thank you very much chief justice guerrero one of the rules of this important there any quarters that you actually go I offer our thanks to the Chief Justice and to the Associate Justices for setting up and arranging this special session of the Supreme Court oral argument here in Monterey. The Sixth District Court's appeal is made up of four counties, Santa Clara County, Santa Cruz County, San Benito County, which is in the team, and Monterey County. And so we are so pleased to have oral argument in the Sixth District Court's appeal. And we recognize both the historic significance of this, but also the significance of Monterey County, both to California and to the world. It's beautiful, of course. There are the tourist attractions.
