Right, good morning and welcome to the October seventh meeting of the Health and Human Services Committee meeting. We do have a shorter meeting today, um, because we thought legislative might go over, but our new chairman and staff did an excellent job. Um but we do have two um pretty robust agenda items for conversation today. And um our next meeting will not be until January. So quite a bit to discuss. But before that, um and especially because our second item is on the employees early child learning center, I wanted to bring to your attention um staff have Put out on your desk the brand new, hot off the presses, and I'm still going through it bit by bit. There's quite a bit of information in here.
It is the um sh the new strategic plan for early childhood in Fairfax County, uh, which included many, many stakeholders. Um, Keisha, Dotson, and Flora are both here, and I just wanna thank and congratulate their team on bringing together um I think more voices than we've ever had in the planning. Um you will see a lot of data, stories, um they did surveying as well as um qualitative uh discussion groups and I think a really, really robust strategic plan for the future of early childhood. And I know many of us, if not all of us on this board are very um focused and committed to helping um improve the future of our children, especially our young ones, um before they get to our public schools. And so there's a lot in here and um hopefully we can find some time to continue this conversation in the near future.
Um to that before we turn to our first um item which will be on the middle school after school budget guidance, followed by the employees child care center, ACCC family engagement updates. I appreciate many of those um members here in the audience. I will turn it over to Deputy County Executive Chris Leonard for NATO. Opening thoughts or comments? Thank
you, Supervisor Palchick. And before we uh pivot away from this strategic plan, I just wanted to highlight the work that Skip did. Our successful children and youth policy team that has uh both school board representation and Board of Supervisors, Supervisor Lask and Supervisor Palchick, uh, really worked hard throughout last year to help put this together in a very collaborative way. So just wanted to highlight that. Also wanted to take time, I know that uh this was brought up at our budget. Budget committee meeting, the Beyond the Bell program. Um we we gave you a nip on that in August. Uh we resent that in September. Make sure you saw that. We continue to work with our with our school partners on implementing that.
Uh as all of you know, the county has long had uh substantial wait lists for the SAC program, so the Beyond the Bell program is an attempt to really uh target that wait list and increase. increase and and uh increase access for for more families across the county. We have twenty pilot schools. So we're still on on uh track to be able to get that implemented this fall. So just wanted to I don't know if you had any questions before we get started in the two agenda items. Uh we've got folks here that can answer whatever questions, but we are on track with our school partners to get that implemented this fall.

Um and before we turn to presentations, uh you should all have the June third June third um meeting summary and just wanna make sure that there were no comments or questions before we move on to today's committee meetings. All right, well seeing none, um a quick reminder, I I know these are two very critical topics, uh our k county's kids and making sure that they are well served and prepared for the future. And I also want to remind us that this is a committee meeting. So we will not be making any decisions, we will not be making any votes, but I think this is a really good opportunity for you all to ask questions and to engage in this conversation as we move through this next um budget cycle.
