Phyllis J. Randall 8:36
the funeral oration of Pericles, this was after, I believe, the Battle
Michael R. Turner 8:41
of Marathon, and the term marathon for that race was the distance that that runner ran from the battle to tell Pericles that, I believe, the Greeks had won. And in his funeral oration following that battle, he said, but each one, man and woman, has won imperishable praise. Each has gained a glorious grave. Not that sepulcher of earth wherein they lie, but the living tomb of everlasting remembrance wherein their glory is enshrined. For the whole earth is a sepulcher of heroes. Monuments may rise and tablets be set up to them in their own lands, but no pen or chisel has trace. They are craven not in stone or brass, but on the living heart of humanity. Take these men and women as your example, and like them, remember that posterity can be only for the free, the sure possession of those alone who have the courage to defend it.
Michael R. Turner 9:29
Please join me in the pledge.
