Good evening, supervisors, good evening, staff, good evening, Loudoun, and Happy New Year to everybody. I'd like to call to order the January 6th, 2026 Loudoun County Board of Supervisors Business Meeting. This room has a hearing loop. I, tonight, get to do words of inspiration and lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance, and so... Let me start off by saying today is the fifth anniversary of January 6th, and just as we remember other important dates in our shared American history, it's important for us to remember, for good or for ill, January 6th. Any attempt, any attempt to rewrite history or sugarcoat the insurrection should not be allowed, should not be accepted, should not be believed.
The harm done to our nation as a whole on January 6th and individual families in particular should not be glossed over. As we enter this new year, I am acutely aware that the tone of the nation is very coarse, and at times it can be very demeaning. In my opinion, the civility is a direct result of President Trump, or rather the lack of civility is a direct result of President Trump. However, I am equally aware that I have no influence over the president's continually giving in to his worst tendencies. What I do have influence over is this board and this body. So we will strive at all times to treat one another with respect and dignity because we are human beings, we are not perfect, and we will mess up.
But the goal will always be to value one another, to value staff, and to honor the weight and the position that the residents of Loudoun County have entrusted to us. In that vein, I want to read a poem, and I'm not really a poem person, but I do like this poem. I want to read a poem by Maya Angelou called The Human Family. I note the obvious differences in the human family. Some of us are serious, some thrive on comedy. Some declare their lives are lived as true profanity, and others claim they really live the real reality. The variety of our skin tones can confuse, bemuse, delight. Brown and pink and beige and purple, tan and blue and white. I sailed upon the seven seas and stopped in every land. I've seen the wonders of the world, yet not one common man.
I know 10,000 women called Jane and Mary Jane, but I've not seen any two who really were the same. Minor twins are different though their features jive, and lovers think quite differently though lying side by side. We love and lose in China. We weep on England's moors and laugh and moan in Ghana and thrive on Spanish shores. We seek success in Finland and are born and die in Maine. In minor ways, we are different. In major ways, we're the same. I note the obvious differences between each sort and type. But we are more alike, my friends, than we are unalike. We are more alike, my friends, than we are unalike. It's a little, if you see the little paper clip and so tonight as we're going through the agenda, we're mostly working out of supplemental packages. I'm going to read the consent agenda and then I'm going to talk about the fact that we have motions on the dais, many of them we've solved just 45 minutes ago. And so I'm gonna, figure out how to handle those as well. But let's do the consent agenda first.
