All right. Good evening commissioners. Thank you for having me back and for your time today. As Paulo said, the objective of today's work session, um, is to discuss what's a major funding opportunity for the County, the Northern Virginia transportation authorities, six year program. Um, this is funded about 18 projects in the County since it started in 2013. So we're coming here today to discuss one process. How do we bring together? We have our own county internal policies for grant applications and then bring that together with NVTA's external policies and effectively merge those to prioritize projects that will compete for this funding. And then two, as Paul said, the recommended projects that have come out of this process for this round.
So just a little bit of background on the Northern Virginia project. Northern Virginia Transportation Authority, they do receive their funding through regional taxes as well as state funds. 30% of the funds they receive, they turn around, they give it back to the member jurisdictions. We can use those for any eligible transportation purposes. At the board's discretion. So here in the county, we are funding our VRE jurisdictional subsidy. We're using it as matches for grants. And then we're funding a whole host of projects from sidewalks all the way up to Minnieville, Prince William Parkway interchange. Now, the remaining 70% of the funding that they get, part of that's funding their operations, and then they're allocating the rest of that to projects that are in their long-range plan transaction that are applied for on a competitive basis and awarded through their six-year program.
So you can think of transaction as our comprehensive plan. You can think of their six-year program like our capital improvement program. Both cases, the plans are outlining that potential, all potential projects. And then these funding programs are advancing those projects and prioritizing them. As I've said, it's funded about 18 projects since 2013. We'll go over some of them. This current round of projects is providing funding in 2029. However, there is a process. NVTA will allow the county to request funds in earlier years. We have successfully done that in the past. And that's an option going forward. So when we're looking for grant applications, we have to look for projects that are in the mobility chapter of our comprehensive plan.
And then NVTA's requirement is that they're in their long-range plan transaction. Both of these plans went through major updates that were adopted in December of 2022. However, they are not consistent. They were both multi-year planning efforts. So at the time that NVTA was soliciting projects for their update, we were still doing our internal modeling. And this commission and board had not yet determined what projects would be in the mobility chapter. So the current transaction that determines eligibility for our upcoming grant applications is essentially the old comp plan plus mobility projects that were in any of the adopted small area plans at the time. This was about 2021. The next transaction update is about to be kicked off in the next six to 12 months.
It's due to be adopted in 2027. That's going to be our opportunity to bring that now in alignment with our mobility chapter. That's also our opportunity to get rid of a lot of projects we've already taken care of over the years and bring in new projects. So in two years when I'm back here speaking to you, We're going to have new projects to decide from. I have included this slide for your reference because we're talking a lot about how we look at criteria in this process, but I won't go into the details unless you want me to. You've seen this slide many times before. It's our internal criteria that we use to determine grant applications. Just note that that first required criteria does include inclusion in long-range plans, including transaction.
