There's a big issue in this country with respect to underfunding of local cybersecurity, whether that be the technology itself or the staffing levels.

This started on Tuesday the 28th when we got word from Minnesota's IT agency that it had observed a coordinated cyberattack against 30 local water facilities.

As the week went along, more information came out and it became clear that this was happening in more places.

Federal agencies were stopping short of formally attributing the activity, but they did say it shared characteristics with the well-documented Iranian attacks.

Certainly, Iran is not the only interested party right now, but they have a demonstrated track record of going after these kinds of devices in this way.

I should say that we attempted to ask Iranian officials about the claims and the allegations, and we did not hear back.

This isn't something that's specific to a location or anything particular about your town or your water facility.

This is about the kinds of devices on these networks and them being open to the Internet in ways that allow bad actors to try to manipulate them.

And there's a big issue in this country with respect to underfunding of local cybersecurity, whether that be the technology itself or the staffing levels.

These kinds of things are major problems.
