The void, before all that, will kind of send my brain into overdrive, assuming the other person was thinking all sorts of things about me, maybe negative, maybe positive, I don't know, my brain would just kind of go into overdrive. matched

I'm sure a lot of people understand that feeling. matched

And so I try and void, avoid, I said void earlier, now I'm saying I try to avoid silence at all costs. matched

filling kind of every natural gap or pause with some leap, misdirection, joke, some random thing, whatever, just to avoid that uncomfortableness of the silence. matched

But as you get older and you go through more challenging events and you speak to more people and you do over almost 600 episodes of a podcast, the more you realize that the pause is often where the real depth starts to form, where the real connection starts to form. matched

If you treat every conversation like a game of tennis, just firing the ball back and forth as quickly and strategically as possible, you won't get very far. matched

It's very transactional. matched

It turns every conversation into something of like a battle, of something you need to win, of a competition. matched

And that's not the point of a conversation because the point of a conversation is to create deeper relationships because we know deeper relationships are the cornerstone of a great life. matched
