Ace, I said it in the beginning. I'll say it now. My biggest problem with Metroidvanias is the map and sometimes just the movement through the map. There's a lot of platforming.
There's a lot of platforming in a Metroidvania. And if your movement is not good or your abilities are not good, it can feel clunky. And when I have to move around this giant map with this clunky movement system... it just gets frustrating to me. So I know that part of exploration in a metroidvania are the skills that you acquire along the way that let you get to these secret areas and stuff.
I will say one of the things when I was watching video of this game was that it looked like there were actually some really neat, like movement abilities. Like you get a little glowing spider. That's almost like a, like a, you know, the grapple gun or something like that, like a grappling hook. There is wall climbing. There's the dashing.
There's the blast off and shoot over to the other side of the level. So it seems like they really kind of took into account a lot of these aspects on how you actually get around in this world.
Does Ender Magnolias do anything? Because my, and this is, I'll say as much as I love Hollow Knight, I hated the map in Hollow Knight, having to run for 10 minutes straight to get to a fast travel point to then travel to a fast travel point that, Oh wait, that's not where I meant to go. Oh, Oh, Oh, Oh, maybe it's this one. Nope. Nope. It's not that one either.
Where the heck was this fast travel point? Where was that? Where was that underground, like swampy gassy area that I'm trying to find? Like, I can't remember where it is. And so for me, a map can absolutely ruin a Metroidvania for me. I will say, we were chatting the other day, Ace, and I asked you if you had played the New Prince of Persia, the Lost Crown one.
And because I said, this has the best map in any Metroidvania I've ever seen. It lets you take a screenshot and pin it to the map itself so that you can remember what the thing was that you couldn't get to. Like at one point there's a chest that's like, it's well above double jump range. And I'm like, well, how the heck am I supposed to get up there?
And so I just took a screenshot of it, pinned it to the map. And then later on in the game, probably six hours later, I got the ability that let me get up there, but I could see it. Like I visually could see, oh yeah, that's where that treasure chest is. I couldn't get to before. And I have heard good things about the map in Ender Magnolias, but what is it that they do?
Is it just a plethora of fast travel points? Like, is there something that makes it more approachable?
I thought that was genius for Lost Crown, to be honest with you. I get that you want these big, sprawling worlds for Metrovania so that you can kind of wander around and explore. But just give me the ability to, once I've experienced it, just skip over some of that stuff, man. Or just have something that says, go to this zone. Or just something.
I can't tell you the number of hours I have lost in this life by backtracking somewhere that it was like, it's not there. Oh, wait. Maybe it's over here. Nope. It's not over there. Like, what was I doing? I know it was somewhere around here. I just can't find it. Yes, exactly. I saw that door.
Yeah. More of that, please, for Metroidvania. So, all right, listen, we're running low on time. Ace, you know, you mentioned it and I just want to double check this because I was going to get your rating on this game. But like, are you truly giving this a 10 out of 10?
where this it's so good man though it's we didn't want to get in a story for spoilers i know that you said so i don't want to really touch yeah i know you said the story actually like like it made you emotional yeah a little bit man in a way yeah yeah it was that's always good it was touching
Well, especially for indie devs, they don't have teams of a hundred people doing all this stuff. And so like you said, somebody that actually releases a complete game that isn't buggy, isn't broken, isn't a, Hey, we'll patch that. Don't worry. Day one patch kind of thing, you know, is, is something that should be rewarded.
Uh, you know, and so if this game sounds like it's up your alley, I mean, 10 out of 10 is hard to argue with better than hollow night. It is better than Hollow Knight. I will die on that hill.
I almost want somebody else to come forward and be like, it is better than Hollow Knight. And then I'll be like, Ace isn't crazy.
So I do have a question, Ryan. With everything that Ace has said, does it get you curious? Does it get you going like, dude, I might need to check this game out at some point? Now, I'll say that under the Preface that we are very close to Kingdom Come Deliverance 2's release, which I know we will be playing and covering for the pod, which will then lead into Avowed.
But let's just pretend that in March, there's nothing. There is stuff in March, which, like I said, we'll cover on the twig. But let's just pretend you got an open month, right? And you're like, dude, what am I going to play? Marvel Rivals, yes, we're going to play that. But like... Are you curious at this point? Is this a game?
You like Metroidvanias more than me, so what's your takeaway from this?
Heck yeah. I will say this. Ace, you got me very curious on this. You know, you've been hounding us about this game for, you know, months and months and months now.
