So we're projecting that road freight will increase by about 77% over the next 30 years and rail freight will only increase by about 6%.
And why do we need to get more freight on rail?
Well, if you've got more trucks on the road, you're dealing with more congestion.
Freight on rail is actually 16 times less carbon intensive.
than road freight.
And it's also about three times less fuel intensive.
So for a range of climate change and population growth reasons, it's really important that we try and make sure we're moving a lot more of our goods on rail.
Sure.
So about 99% of Australia's international trade moves through our maritime ports.
And if we have issues with connection to the rest of the world, it will usually be felt through our maritime ports first.
So we've got a range of investment opportunities, mostly around creating more capacity in our ports.
So there'll be much larger ships coming to Australia over the next 20 or 30 years.
So moving from about 14,000 trade equivalent units, it's a measurement of size of tanker, to up to 18,000 TEU.
So we'll need to do more dredging of channels.
We'll need to have a lot more productivity on how our ports
ports actually work.
So a lot more automation, a lot more investment in dedicated freight rail out of our ports that then connect into the broader freight network as well.
And then finally, we've also got a big focus on diversifying ports.
So that might be ports like Newcastle Port, which has traditionally been a coal port.
That's starting to do a lot more heavy lifting on the energy transition, so bringing in oversize, overmass, wind turbine type materials, and also diversifying some of our port environments like on the Western Trade Coast in West Australia, the investment in the Henderson Navy Base, so the wraparound infrastructure around that, the road, the rail, the energy.
