Now, certainly, that life had some downsides, and those are serious, including being manipulated and taken advantage of.

But if the choice is between living like Dolly and living like Atherton, a woman utterly consumed by hatred, by her sense of how the universe was unjust to her,
podcast-host
and fighting a pathetic one-way battle with someone who keeps winning, even when she's not aware that there's actually this competition going on in her head.
podcast-host
Between these two extremes, we have Johnny Dollar.
podcast-host
And Johnny does some interesting things in this episode.
podcast-host
Johnny really, based on what we learned towards the end, knew a lot about this case and elements of the solution before the train ever left town.
podcast-host
He, from his research, knew that Barnaby had some suspicious business dealings.
podcast-host
which apparently intensified when he and Prowl started working together.

And then he knew that Barnaby had left an estate of a million dollars.

And this was a time in 1955 where that was still a lot of money.

So even before the train left the station, Johnny knew that there was something very suspicious about the way Prowl had taken care of the books.
podcast-host
But he doesn't tip his hand on any of this to Dolly or even to the audience until much later in the story.
podcast-host
And I think there is a sense that Johnny is truly trying to protect Dolly in the way that Prel and Barnaby pretended to.
podcast-host

podcast-host

podcast-host
And that sort of exposure makes him, I think, more appreciative of what a truly rare and remarkable person Dolly was.
podcast-host
Though it's fair to ask, which is the better example of good character or kindness?
podcast-host
You have Dolly, whose kindness and overall open-hearted approach is assisted by the efforts of others to keep her in the dark.
podcast-host
Well, Johnny's goodness and kindness comes out of having seen the ugliest parts of humanity and choosing to hold on in spite of it.
podcast-host
But whether it's stronger stuff or not, Johnny suggests that at the end, he would like to live in the sort of world that Dolly inhabited and as she imagined it to exist.
