I published some research with another one of our former students, Jihei Shen, where we found that people who procrastinate moderately, either because that's their natural habit or because we tempted them to with funny videos while they were supposed to be doing a business problem-solving task, some procrastination actually boosted creativity because with some distance, while you were distracted, while you were not staring right at the problem, you were more likely to reframe it and you were more likely to consider some non-obvious solutions.
And then the question is, well, what happened to the people who were severe procrastinators?
I don't know.
They never finished our study.
Actually, they did.
And they were not creative.
The people who didn't procrastinate at all, they tended to fall victim to this what's called plunging in bias, where they rushed ahead with their first idea.
The people who procrastinated too much, they made the opposite mistake.
They waited until the last minute, and then they had to rush ahead with their easiest idea.
And there was a sweet spot in the middle where people waited for the best idea, but then they still had time to develop it.
Well, I just have to say on that, it's actually, it's a completely different kind of story than I've heard before.
Because when you were talking earlier, I was thinking about Kieran Snyder's finding that
Men tend to get task feedback, whereas women are given this very kind of vague personality feedback, which doesn't help them get better.
And in your case, you literally got no personality feedback.
What did you do with that?
What did no personality mean and how did you overcome it?
It's incredibly frustrating.
I think it's a good reminder that
useful feedback and coaching focuses on behaviors, but also a lot of people hold back on giving that kind of feedback and coaching to women because they're afraid of hurting their feelings.
And then they're actually preventing the women they're working with and managing from learning, which I would not advise.
