The best thing you can do is get curious and interview them.
And instead of trying to motivate them to change, your job is to help them find their own motivations to change.
And so in the addiction context, what they would do is they would ask somebody, you know, tell me a little bit about
Uh, you know, what what are the the effects of alcohol in your life?
You know, what are the upsides, what are the downsides?
They're trying to be very neutral about it, right?
They're they're not steering you in one direction.
And you know, then then somebody would say, well, you know, I love how I feel when I drink.
But then, you know, I I got into a car accident.
And, you know, instead of saying, oh, that's terrible, you know you shouldn't do this again, um, Miller and Roldeck would would say, Oh, but you know, you survived the car accident.
Like clearly this is not a big deal in your life.
Like, tell me more.
And very often um the client would say, No, you know, actually this is a huge problem.
And then Miller and Roldeck would say, well, why?
Like what what is the issue it poses for you?
And then what was happening was the clients were were basically talking themselves into change.
And
I think, you know, there there have been over a thousand randomized controlled experiments showing that this is a a helpful way to help people surface their own reasons to shift their attitudes or their actions.
And when I met Daryl Davis, Daryl was uh one of the stars of of Think Again.
When I first met him, I was just blown away that this jazz musician took it upon himself to confront people who believed that he was unintelligent and that he was a lesser human being because of his race.
