We've gone from being a blog on my website to a charity that is active in every county in Ireland, that's working with thousands of people every year, where there's a team of 70 of us and half of us are autistic.
So we're one of the few autistic-led charities in the world.
It is indeed, yes, absolutely, because we believe it's really important to have that lived experience at the heart of everything that we do.
So like often in my life, you know, I would have struggled at points of transition.
So first of all, starting school, you know, moving from special school to mainstream.
moving to secondary school.
New rules, changes the environment, a sense of overwhelm.
Okay.
And I was so fortunate that in the secondary school I was in, it was really supportive and it was really a place, you know, so much of the advocacy that I've done
The fact that I'm able to give talks and public speak, all of that really started in St.
David's in Greystone.
So I was lucky to have this incredible community there.
But then suddenly you're moving to a massive university, thousands of people.
You're trying to navigate that.
You're trying to navigate the bureaucracy.
There's still a problem actually, I think, that when you're an autistic child, you know, your parents are incredible advocates.
They can pick up the phone for you.
If you're in the right school or the right environment, you know, people can wrap scaffold support around you.
But suddenly we presume when you're 18, you kind of magically know how to advocate for yourself and magically know how to do these things for yourself.
And even me, who at this stage was in the media talking about autism, I found that transition really difficult.
