It is some of the best in the world for looking at safety.
It really doesn't look at food fraud.
That's not on the radar of the regulators.
The other thing with what we found with the regulatory system is its responsibility is split across multiple regulators.
So you've got the Food Standards Australia and New Zealand, which sets the rules.
It's not a regulator, it sets them.
The states and councils enforce many of the rules.
And then you've got the Federal Agricultural Department, which checks some imported food and the ACCC can act on misleading claims.
So we don't have a single regulator clearly responsible for detecting origin misrepresentations, adulterations.
And that's in sharp contrast to what some countries around the world are doing, such as the UK and parts of Europe.
We spoke to a number of experts in this space including Janine Curl who spent her career working across Australia's food regulatory system and she's an expert in food fraud and she argues the fact we're not investigating creates a lot of gaps and a lot of opportunities for exploitation.
She says you go into a supermarket and it is present.
Yeah, that's right.
And food fraud is a breach of trust.
So Australian shoppers are being deceived daily.
From the many experts we've spoken to, they're all in complete agreement that Australia needs a food fraud regulator.
It also needs more testing of authenticity of product instead of relying on
companies and suppliers to just provide paperwork because sometimes that paperwork can be fraudulent.
And the company with the brand might not even know what's going on because they're getting ingredients, they're getting different things from all over the world.
So that's what we need, a food fraud regulator.
