I would take them at their word on this one because there's so many WhatsApp group chats.

The minute you walk into a new parents group, a club, an association, a school, even at work, there's you.

I'd say the average Irish person conservatively has 10 to 15 WhatsApp groups.

And that's a very conservative figure.

And these are people who they mightn't be close friends.

They might just be associates.

And the problem with WhatsApp groups at the moment is

is that every one of them shows your phone number.

And there could be hundreds of people in these WhatsApp groups.

So the idea here is that you will be able to use, to substitute your username.

So for me, that might be Adrian Weckler.

Now,

You still have to have a phone number to get a WhatsApp account.

You won't be able to just start an account using an email like you can for other social media or messaging sites.

But WhatsApp thinks that this is a way to take the privacy pressure off people who don't want to divulge their phone number.
