What is to be gained?
And that's a slightly different question from how do you argue your way out of it.
So let me answer your question.
I give a couple of different answers in the book, but let me just pick one because they're the stakes.
Sort of one of the topics of the book is sort of the stakes of recognizing aspiration.
But here's one from the conclusion of the book.
So one place where this aspirational phenomena have shown up in the philosophical literature is in the literature on big life decisions, but specifically the decision to have a child.
And, you know, for the reasons we've already gone through, that decision can seem kind of obscure.
Like what how could it possibly look attractive to you, given that the good that you're getting is totally unknown to you before?
Now, suppose that you think that there is no rational way to make that transition.
You know, it can happen to you, right?
And then you can be happy about it.
But there's no, a person doesn't have reasons for having a child.
I mean, except in cases where they're having a child for, you know, because they need enough hands to bring in the harvest or whatever.
By the way, we're talking about in, what some people might say, in wealthy Western societies.
I suspect in many, many societies, even ones that are not wealthy and Western, the main reason for having a child is
is for its own sake.
And so the question then is, is that rational?
Do you have a reason?
Are you acting on a reason?
