It's your deep self, your hidden self, but it's somewhere in there in you already.
And one contribution of this book to what you might call the philosophy of the self is the idea that your true self can be something that you're working towards.
Yeah, so I think this part of my book is the most exciting part, and I mean the word exciting with all the positive and negative connotations that it might have, in that it's an extremely bold claim for which I give some argument, but I myself feel that it probably needs more argument than I give.
It came about in a funny way.
I assumed that the opposite was true.
I mean, obviously, you could have any sort of aspiration.
And then I tried to come up with examples, and I couldn't.
And I tried and I tried.
And what would happen is I would start with an example like the ones you've just given.
I'd be like, right, sure.
Bad aspiration.
Somebody wants to become a mafioso.
Somebody wants to become a mass murderer.
Somebody aspires to all those different things.
Now, let me start telling the story of it so I can put it in my book and give an example of a bad aspiration.
And as I would tell the story, it would sort of turn into something that wasn't an aspiration.
It would turn into a case of self-cultivation or a case of being shaped.
And I found this very puzzling.
Why did all my examples somehow transform themselves in my hand as though they had like a life of their own?
And here's the conclusion that I came to.
