So for buying $40 in gas, it could temporarily show up as a $175 purchase on your account.

So when you're using a debit card, if you don't have enough money in your checking account, the transaction might get declined or you may have to pay an overdraft fee.

And the debit card holds can last longer based on the network that the merchant is using.

And that might be longer than the two-hour window that is usually expected.

so we live in an era that we're on high alert for fraud and unauthorized purchases but when this hold is going on for a short time a lot of people told me that they never noticed it but sometimes when people do they go to social media platforms complaining that they thought that this was fraud or they were not used to this high of a hold so people are concerned about this

So the best way to avoid a hold if it's going to cause a problem is to check your balance before putting your debit card in the machine.

And also you can pay in advance at the register or with cash.

And like you said, people use plastic for almost everything.

We use our credit cards and debit cards for a lot of purchases.
