Less so for the government and actually more so for the opposition, curiously enough.

So Spain has a very interesting constitution whereby everything is decentralized.

And that's a that's a counter reaction to the years of dictatorship.

And so both in terms of land management and crisis management, those are both regional competences.

So in this case, what we have is a pretty extraordinary circumstance whereby the community of Madrid actually asked the national government to take over power and essentially come into its own jurisdiction to handle the fires because it admitted it was not able to address it.

Of course, there is going to be a blame game after this in terms of how exactly the woodlands got to such a state.

And the reality is that this is very, very expensive.

of previously being a foreign correspondent in Portugal during the years that Theodore was describing in 2017 when they had their massive deadly fires.

And what you hear is the same thing over and over again.

You have the phenomenon of people moving to cities during the latter half of the 20th century.

There's just a lot less activity in the rural areas.

And the sort of farming, sheep herding that used to deal with a lot of that land management, it just doesn't happen anymore.

Very much so.

And the fact that it is, you know, in the French case, obviously, Bordeaux is a major city.

In the Spanish case, it really is something where I think it is driving the point much closer to home than other catastrophic fires that we've had, in the sense that people being directly affected are people who work in the city, who work in the ministries, and who are now unable to go to their homes or actually seeing their homes go up in flames.

And I do think that this is going to put a lot of pressure on regional governments.

The majority of these are in the hands of the conservative opposition in Spain.
