And then also roll out more incentives for individual investors, such as giving them maybe a free trade or a free stock if they sign up for an account or just sort of gamifying trading and making it more accessible and fun on mobile apps.
And then, of course, the rising market really helped with that, too.
I mean, we saw in January and February things like GameStop and AMC Entertainment just take off.
And, you know, there's a combination of a few things there.
Easy money, also social media, making it really fun and sort of, I think, making a lot of people feel like if I don't invest in this thing right now, I'm really missing out.
And then also just the fact that it's fun to invest when markets are going up.
So, you know, the combination of those things, I think, really contributed to this big rise in individual investing activity that we saw in the first quarter.
I mean, I think a lot of career investors would say that's sort of the worst reason to jump in on something just because you don't want to miss out.
I mean, you should really sort of buy something because you have conviction that it's going to perform strongly over the long term and not just jump into something because everyone else you know is talking about it.
But it was really just incredible.
back in January and February, how big this FOMO effect was.
Because even for me, I was hearing from all sorts of friends of mine who don't work in finance and don't really ordinarily watch the markets who were talking about GameStop.
And it was kind of just everywhere.
I mean, everyone I talked to was saying their Uber driver was talking about GameStop or at the laundromat, people were talking about GameStop.
So that kind of effect, especially when you can see it play out in real time,
and also on social media, I think is incredibly powerful.
some folks i spoke to throughout the quarter were saying you know maybe this is sort of a young person's game now i mean information is moving so quickly and the fact that these investors are very often incredibly active on social media forums like twitter reddit tick tock and they're really sort of up on the latest news that allows them to move in a very quick and nimble way and it's very very different from decades ago where you know you might have had to place a phone call or just you know drive up to your broker's office and
and manually put in an order.
So I think that definitely has something to do with it.
But I think there's another element of it, and it's that these younger investors often are sort of not afraid to say, we don't know what we're doing.
