I got the opportunity to put my arms around him, give him a hug, and say, I forgive you.
And I think that was the biggest thing that I experienced from hearing his entire story.
I think at the end of his life, he was genuinely sorry for being the kind of parent that he was and maybe being the kind of husband that he was.
And he held up his hands, and with tears in his eye, he said that my regrets are the lives that passed through my hands.
So he did die with that regret, you know, late in life.
I keep telling the story of my father because I want to tell you that the Holocaust happened.
It happened to me.
I had to look every day at a man with 144-738 written in green ink on his arm that was tattooed when he arrived at Auschwitz.
Even the third generation has had to deal with their share of trauma.
And quite frankly, being a child of a Holocaust survivor, I passed a lot of the bad parenting skills, maybe the impatience, not being able to listen.
I was fortunate I married well.
It was one of the last things that I could do for him, you know, for my sense of forgiveness and for his sense of just unburdening himself.
So it was important.
He was just a brilliant man that never got an opportunity to have brilliance in the right way.
There were flashes of me experiencing his love.
And I tried to give him all the love that I could, whether it was successful or not, whether I could break through the Holocaust or not.
I'm happy with how I treated him.
The word is difficult, proud.
I am, I can't use that word.
I can't use the word proud.
