Would we still be able to trust him?
Or is he literally going to hand over the keys to Minas Tirith to Sauron?
And I love how Tolkien here tells us, you now have to reinterpret all of the conversations between Denethor and Gandalf in light of what we now know to be Gandalf's doubts, right?
that explains some of the harshness and the conflict and that absolute tension that is there.
We know from Denethor's perspective, it's that jealousy of Gandalf.
He's not liked Gandalf any more than he liked Thorongil, being Aragorn back when his father was steward.
He calls him a usurper, as we'll see later.
But from Gandalf's perspective, it's can I even trust that this guy's good?
I mean, he may be a jerk, but at least he's on my side.
Can I trust that he's still on my side?
That's a huge question.
Absolutely.
Even to just say, look, I don't like you, but I like you more than I like Sauron.
And you can trust that I am on your side in this particular conflict.
You'd think.
That's just, but how would he have, I mean, it's not like he used the Palantir to see Gandalf's thoughts or anything.
It can't, it can't really do that.
He would have known because he's just really deeply perceptive.
That's something we learned about him.
He was very insightful, very sharp.
