For years, publishers have complained about the declining traffic they're getting from Google, but they've always clung to the search traffic as an important source of discovery for readers and ultimately ad revenue.
I've never heard publishers talk about turning off Google's access to their content.
Several publishers have told me that they're increasingly discussing options, including opting out of AI overviews and potentially all of Google.
USA Today Co.
's CEO Mike Reed said he's willing to turn off Google's access if the downward trend in search activity continues.
People, which two years ago got 55% of its traffic from Google, now only gets a quarter of its traffic from Google, and said that the company is weighing its options.

But there are also a number of bad bots that are taking their content and using it without permission and selling it to LLMs who are looking for more publisher content to help train their models.
Time is using a sort of Trojan horse approach.
They're creating text-based ads that regular readers never see, but that AI crawlers could potentially find.
Their hope is that Google's AI overviews and other chatbots that hoover up editorial content may also reference the branded content that they've made specifically for the bots when responding to user queries.
