The Guardian just put out a hundred best books and somehow put Middlemarch as the first, which I think shows you part of the problem with some of these lists, which is that these lists are a reflection of how people want to be seen as readers.

So I think rather than putting any of the commercial or genre fiction that we've been speaking about, people put books like Middle March and name authors like Proust as being the top.

You have human ego, you have how people want to be seen.

And of course you have the bias of previous lists.
