Being brought in front of a medical board and deemed incompetent or unfit to perform the job you've trained for your whole adult life.
In the end, the board unanimously agreed that Caitlin had reported the case to the proper authorities, but they found her guilty of violating privacy laws when she shared the age and home state of the patient, despite the fact that neither of these pieces of information are listed in HIPAA.
She got to keep her medical license, but they fined her three thousand dollars and issued a letter of reprimand.
Caitlin's continued working as a clinician this whole time.
It's what she would rather be doing, she says, than defending herself against the state.
But although she tries not to let the legal mess affect how she shows up with her patients, Indiana's legal and political climate have fundamentally shifted what it means for her to provide reproductive health care.
