A leading figure in the eugenics movement was Mari Stopes.
She was born in Edinburgh in the 1880s and at the turn of the century...
Stopes actually became a scientist.
This is Jane Carey, a historian at the University of Wollongong.
She becomes the youngest doctor of science in Britain.
She studies paleobotany.
Her specialty is actually coal.
I think that the classification system that she developed in her PhD work for coal is actually still being used.
So Stokes had a very prestigious scientific career, but then she turned her attention to birth control.
The story goes the reason that she did this was because she married, but the marriage was never consummated because both parties were so sexually ignorant they did not know that they were not actually having sex properly.
What were they doing?
I don't know.
Wow.
I'm sorry, I don't have that juicy detail.
That's fine.
So the marriage gets annulled.
But this is a precipitating moment for Stopes.
And then during World War I when she becomes very interested in this idea of birth control and also of women's sexual pleasure.
This is probably the direct product from her own failed marital experience.
