So, I mean, obviously human gestation is divided into trimesters, but you do often hear this talk about how babies need this fourth trimester and we sort of need to recreate the womb for three months once the baby is born.

Does that negate that idea, Penny?

So breast augmentation is the most common kind of cosmetic surgery.

And as well as being used to simply increase breast size for those who want it, breast implants are also used for breast reconstructions following mastectomies to restore volume lost after pregnancy and breastfeeding, and in gender-affirming surgeries too.

And actually, I recently learned that the first documented breast augmentation surgery ever performed.

formed, which was way back in eighteen ninety three, was done in a mastectomy context.

Yeah, um, it's actually a bit of a crazy story, um, because this Czech surgeon removed part of a forty-one year old woman's left breast that had this painful lipoma in it, which is it's like a benign tumour made of fat cells.

And then he actually found another one of these fatty tumors in her back.

And he chopped that out and then put that into her left breast to reconstruct its volume.

Exactly, yes.

Well it was around the middle of last century, um which was a time when everyone wanted a Marilyn Monroe figure.
